Built mostly in the 1960s, America\u2019s missile silos were\n an answer to a nasty nuclear problem. After the end of World War II, it\n seemed like a real possibility that America would fight a war with the \nSoviet Union and that it would be nuclear. To make sure Russia couldn\u2019t \nattack without immediate retaliation, America maintained a fleet of \nnuclear-armed bombers stationed across the globe, ready to strike Moscow\n 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Many of the pilots took speed to get through their shifts<\/a>. Bombs were lost<\/a>. Planes crashed<\/a>, and the nukes contaminated parts of Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n America\n needed a way to nuke anyone it wanted, at any time, without sending its\n flyboys into the air jacked up on amphetamine while carrying nuclear \nbombs. So, throughout the rest of the Cold War, the Pentagon constructed\n missile silos across the less populated states of the union.
